Resynthesizing Beginner Piano Education: A Model for Innovation (2018-2025)

Resynthesizing Beginner Piano Education: An Innovative Approach Shaped by Analysis and Re-design is the result of six years of research and over two decades of teaching experience. After years identifying gaps and shortcomings in widely marketed piano books, this 400-page PhD-format book sets out a practical framework for educators and researchers to analyze, test, and redesign their own methods. It demonstrates how teachers can systematically address gaps in traditional pedagogy and develop effective, innovative solutions based on real classroom experience through research.

Developing a Contemporary Pedagogy

This research critically examines traditional methods and proposes innovative paths for beginner piano students. The methodology integrates scientific analysis with practical application, offering a transparent example of how to develop and refine contemporary pedagogy. Teachers and researchers can adapt this approach to their own contexts.

Measuring Impact: A Data-Driven Approach

Employing a mixed-method approach, I combined quantitative and qualitative data to critically examine traditional piano pedagogy. Through a longitudinal study (2018–2025), I collected and analyzed long-term student progress data, comparing the newly developed methodology against conventional teaching frameworks. The comparative analysis revealed measurable improvements in technical proficiency and engagement, offering teachers a transparent template for developing and refining student-centered approaches.

Repertoire Curation of Early Intermediate Piano Pieces (2024)

A key focus is the transition between beginner and intermediate repertoire—a stage where many students struggle due to misleading or inadequate resources. My curated repertoire list, shared through a dedicated YouTube series and e-book, is the product of extensive teaching experience and careful market analysis. The book features improved and edited scores, with specific tips for what to focus on in each piece, providing clear guidance for teachers. Each selection is chosen to access diverse technical and musical materials, while avoiding the most famous works and maintaining a strict, accurate early-intermediate level—addressing the common problem of books that mislabel more difficult pieces as early-intermediate. This project aims to set an example for piano teachers on how repertoire selections can be improved and tailored to student needs.
